Fragrance behaves differently as the weather turns. In cold, dry air, scent evaporates more slowly and projects less, so the light citrus that felt perfect in July can seem to vanish in December. That is why so many people switch to warmer, richer fragrances in fall and winter.
Notes that work in cold weather
- Amber and resins: warm, glowing and long lasting.
- Vanilla and tonka bean: soft sweetness that feels comforting.
- Spices: cinnamon, cardamom, clove and pepper add warmth and energy.
- Woods: sandalwood, cedar and patchouli give depth.
- Leather and tobacco: for a darker, more dramatic signature.
Choose a richer concentration
Eau de parfum usually holds up better than eau de toilette in cold weather. Its higher concentration gives a fragrance more presence on skin and on wool and cashmere.
How to wear warm scents well
- Start light: rich fragrances are noticeable, so two or three sprays are often enough.
- Apply to skin and lightly to a scarf. Fabric holds scent for a long time.
- Keep a fresher scent for the office and a deeper one for evenings.
